Monifieth Golf Club
Founded in 1858, Monifieth Golf Club,
is not only the oldest existing club at Monifieth but also one of the
oldest clubs in Scotland. In the early years the members had no clubhouse
so meetings and social functions were held in local halls. As membership
numbers increased the need for a clubhouse became essential and in March
1907 the first clubhouse was opened.
The present building stands on the original
site but many alterations and extensions have taken place over the years
to gradually improve the facilities on offer.
The result is a good quality building
with a large comfortable lounge overlooking the 18th. green of the Medal
Course, and a more cosy, informal “back bar” with Sky TV.
The well stocked bar areas serve both members and visitors and there
is a full and varied menu on offer to tempt the tastebuds. An upstairs
pool room is a popular venue for the Junior members while a separate
dining room provides a relaxed place to enjoy a delicious meal.
A Ladies Section was established in 1925
and has gone from strength to strength with now over 120 members. The
ladies along with 330 men and around 100 juniors provide the Club with
an excellent membership base.
Visitors are however always welcome and
the Club and its staff provide a warm and friendly place to enjoy a
meal, drink and a laugh after a round of golf. The bar is open all day
each day from 11.00am.
The Club has an excellent tradition of
producing top quality golfers capable of competing at District, National
and International level. Probably best know is 4 time Walker Cup player,
Ian Hutcheon, who during the 70's and early 80's was considered to be
one of the best amateur golfers in the world. His list of achievements,
which you can read on the display board in the lounge, bears testimony
to the undoubted skill with which he took on and beat the best in the
world.
Also worthy of a mention is Kathryn Marshall whose excellent amateur
record was the ideal preparation for life as a touring professional
culminating in a Solheim Cup selection in the late 90's.
A very strong emphasis is also placed
in the Club on nurturing the stars of the future and considerable time
and effort goes into giving these youngsters the best possible start
to their golfing careers. We currently have over 100 Junior members
in the club and our Junior girls convener, Mrs Ann Hunter, recently
received a prestigious national award for her work in the promotion
and development of junior girls’s golf, both in the Monifieth
Club and local area.
All in all the Monifieth Golf Club is
an excellent base from which to play golf. So if you are in the area
why not drop in and enjoy our hospitality.
You are always welcome!
